Saving energy is more important than ever - environmentally and financially

With energy prices doubling in the last two years, the average annual energy bill in Ireland has increased from €2,000 to €4,300! Here are 6 ecoconscious energy saving tips to reduce your energy bill. (All savings are for an “average” Irish home):

1. Switch supplier

If you haven’t switched supplier in the last year you can expect to save 10% on your energy bill (Saving: €430/yr). Go to www.bonkers.ie to switch.

2. Turn down the thermostat

Save 10% by turning down your thermostat by 1oC. (Saving: €180/yr)

3. Service your boiler

Servicing your boiler annually will save you 5% on your space and water heating costs. (Saving: €120/yr)

4. Switch your lightbulbs

Switching from regular bulbs to LEDs can save you up to 50% on your lighting costs. (Saving: €150/yr)

5. Use night rate electricity

Run your dishwasher and washing machine on night rate electricity (50% cheaper). (Winter hours: 11pm to 8am, Summer: 12 midnight to 9am). This simple step can reduce your electricity bill by 7%. (Saving: €130/yr)

6. Manage your appliances

Making small changes to how you use and look after your appliances, can reduce their energy usage by 10%. Run on full loads, use low temperature settings, clear out filters, etc. (Saving: €150/yr).

By being more aware of energy use throughout your home, you can reduce energy use and costs by 15-20%, with little or no investment. A saving of €650 to €850/yr for an “average home is very achievable.
